Abstract

This article underscores certain historical and pastoral weaknesses regarding “participation” in Christ’s Paschal Mystery by the faithful at the celebration of the Eucharist. It offers a historical description of the value of the paschal signs and their key role in “active participation”. The analysis of the “paschal” understanding of the sacramental signs reveals the need for a renewed definition of “active participation” which goes beyond the external reforms, requires the biblical, kerygmatic and liturgical formation of all the faithful, and entails the conversion of the entire person into the Body of Christ.
