Saint Mark the Lion? Voices from antiquity on the symbolism of the evangelist
Main Article Content
Abstract
The four gospels in the Christian tradition received a symbolic significance in the form of four living beings. This biblical image was read and interpreted by the Christian writers of the first centuries. Such attribution results in the current symbolism linking the biblical image of the four living beings with the figure of the four evangelists. Focusing on the Gospel of Mark, this article shows the reasons that led the authors of the first centuries to identify the evangelists with the specific figure of each of the four beings.
