Auto da Barca do Inferno and Auto da Compadecida A Theological Hearing: "You are not in hell. Here you can play"
Main Article Content
Abstract
The Auto da Barca do Inferno and the Auto da Compadecida are the fruit of deeply Christian mindsets and sensibilities; They demonstrate in their texts, with exquisite doses of humor and sarcasm, various aspects such as concern with social religious experience, hypocrisy, man’s view of life and death, etc. However, they present other precious aspects, such as the common view of existence and theological questions: God, judgment, faith, deeds, salvation and damnation, morality, the fragile condition of man, the Accuser, Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory. Both books are solid elements for the cultural sedimentation of the Gospel. They also contribute, with their sometimes convergent, sometimes divergent views, to the growth and enrichment of the popular imagination in various directions and senses, preserving and protecting their national identities.
